Garland daisy, also known as crown daisy, is a leafy herb native to the Mediterranean that produces lush green foliage topped with cheerful yellow and white flowers. Known as tong ho or tónghāo in China, ssukgat in Korea, tần ô in Vietnam and shungiku in Japan, the garland daisy is a ubiquitous ingredient all across the continent of Asia, where its tender green leaves are frequently chopped and served in stir-fries, stews, and hotpots. Beyond its culinary appeal, the garland daisy is an excellent producer of lovely flowers that are beautiful in the landscape and great for floral arrangements. Plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall and bloom summer through fall. Self-seeding annual.

Garland daisy, also known as crown daisy, thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. It adapts well to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, or well-drained soils. These annuals are relatively tolerant of soil conditions but excel in fertile, well-draining soil. They are drought-resistant once established and can tolerate dry periods. Garland daisies are versatile, suitable for gardens, containers, or as edible greens. Their cheerful yellow or white daisy-like blooms and delicate foliage add brightness and flavor to salads and gardens, making them a delightful addition to sunny to partly shaded spots.

Sow garland daisy seeds directly in well-drained soil in early spring or late winter in mild climates. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and water gently. Maintain consistent moisture until germination, which typically occurs in about 7-14 days. Thin seedlings to the desired spacing once they grow large enough. Garland daisies can also be started indoors roughly 6-8 weeks before the last frost.

Transplant seedlings outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing plants at least 12" in all directions. Keep well-watered until the seedlings are established.

Garland daisies make excellent cut flowers. Their cheerful blooms and dark green foliage add color and volume to arrangements. They can last for up to two weeks in a vase, if floral preservative is used.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Saving seeds from crown daisy is relatively easy. Since few distinct varieties of crown daisy are known to exist. Isolation precautions are not necessary.

HARVESTING SEED:

Allow the seed heads to fully mature. Then clip the heads and place the mostly dry seed heads in a paper bag to finish drying. Rub using hands or shake in a bag to release the seeds. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.

Garland daisy seeds will remain viable for several years if stored under ideal conditions.

This is the tale of how I raised these lovely and delectable chrysanthemums in my yard.

Taste Profile: These greens have a distinct flavor that is fragrant, sweet, and somewhat bitter.
Nutritional Value: Packed with fats, vitamins A, B, and C, proteins, and lucid.
Planting and Development:

Preparing the seeds:

chose to plant directly in the field, following the advice given for this species.
To guarantee the ideal growing space, the number of seeds per area was calculated.
Climate and Soil:

enriched and well-drained soil, perfect for chrysanthemums, was prepared.
Select a sunny area since Crown Daisy prefers strong light.
Cultivation Perspectives:

Maintenance and Watering:

Watered the soil on a daily basis to keep it damp but not soggy.
Extra organic compost was added to provide more nutrients.

Harvest Time: About 35 to 40 days after seeding, the leaves were ready to be harvested.
For the finest flavor, choose the leaves while they were still fresh and young.
